Why Generative AI Needs DLP
Employees use AI by giving it context. That context can include customer names, support tickets, contracts, source code, financial figures, HR details, security logs, or spreadsheets. Traditional DLP tools were designed around email, endpoints, file movement, and network channels. Generative AI adds a new pathway: sensitive data can be copied into prompts, attached to chats, included in tool calls, or passed through model APIs. DLP for ChatGPT and generative AI focuses on preventing sensitive data from reaching the wrong model or tool in the first place.
What AI DLP Should Detect
AI DLP should detect obvious regulated data such as PII, PHI, payment card data, financial account numbers, credentials, API keys, and secrets. It should also handle business-sensitive data that is harder to identify with simple patterns: source code, unreleased financials, customer contracts, legal matter details, board materials, pricing strategy, personnel records, and acquisition plans. Good detection combines patterns, context, data labels, user role, destination, and workflow type.
Block, Warn, Mask, or Log
AI DLP should support multiple actions. Blocking is right for high-risk data that should not proceed. Warning is useful when the system sees possible risk but the user may have a legitimate reason. Masking or redaction lets the workflow continue by replacing sensitive details before the prompt reaches the model. Logging records what happened for audit and pattern analysis. A mature program uses all four actions based on sensitivity, user role, model, and business context.
DLP for Chat, Files, APIs, and Agents
AI data protection should apply across the places employees and systems actually use AI: chat prompts, file uploads, copy-paste workflows, browser tools, model APIs, internal apps, and AI agents. If DLP only covers one interface, employees can unintentionally bypass it through another. A governed AI layer should apply consistent sensitive data protection whether the user is chatting with an assistant, a developer is calling an API, or an agent is sending a tool request.
Auditability Matters
DLP without auditability leaves teams unable to prove what happened. Each control event should record user, workspace, model, destination, data category, action taken, policy rule, and timestamp. For privacy reasons, organizations may choose to store full prompt text only for high-risk workflows or under special access controls. The operational goal is to make investigations possible while avoiding a new sensitive-data repository that creates its own risk.
Avoiding Employee Workarounds
DLP fails when it creates too much friction. If every ordinary prompt is blocked, employees will use personal devices, personal AI accounts, or unapproved tools. Calibrate controls based on real event data, give users clear explanations, and provide approved alternatives for common tasks. The best AI DLP program feels like a helpful guardrail most of the time, not a wall around every useful workflow.
